The Ofuro is a small but deep soaking tub. Most Western tubs are less than 12 inches deep. The Japanese tub is about twice that deep so the bather is immersed in steaming hot water over the shoulders.
During a series of visits with Hideo at his acupuncture studio, our conversations would often turn to wood working, and the projects we were doing. The idea of building an Ofuro for outdoor use had been on Hideo’s mind for some time… and so it was decided that we’d build one together.
Western red cedar was chosen for its durability and sweet aroma. The type of joints and tolerances utilized were critical to ensure a watertight seal, and to prevent the water pressure from pushing the corners apart.
